Empowered Women Transform Communities Around the World

Empowered women transform communities by creating more inclusive and equitable societies.

When women are empowered, they can:

  • Inspire others: Women who are empowered can inspire others to pursue education, entrepreneurship, and prioritize health.
  • Improve communities: As women thrive, so do their families and communities.
  • Increase economic productivity: Women’s empowerment can help raise economic productivity.
  • Reduce infant mortality: Women’s empowerment can contribute to improved health and nutrition, which can help reduce infant mortality.
  • Increase educational opportunities: Women’s empowerment can increase the chances of education for the next generation.

Empowering women involves:

  • Providing women with equal opportunities, support, and resources.
  • Dismantling systemic barriers that hinder women’s progress, such as discrimination, unequal pay, and limited access to education and financial services.
  • Educating men and boys to value the contribution of women and putting an enforcement system in place where possible.

Some examples of initiatives that empower women include:

  • Microloans: Providing an initial fund for women’s clubs to loan out to their members .to start home businesses.
  • Clothing drives: Hosting a clothing drive and filling gift bags with items from women-led organizations.
  • Grandmothers’ schools: Encouraging senior women to become literate through schools.
  • Supporting young women leaders: Supporting young women leaders, such as Snehal Kalbhor, who installed high mast lamps in her village to create a safer environment for women and girls.

Now let’s take a look at 5 notable examples of how empowered women transform communities and change lives around the world.

1. Benefits of Economic Empowerment for Women

Economic empowerment is one of the most important factors that help women fully participate in society. In many developing areas it’s still believed that women should stay by the stove and be homemakers and mothers.

But microfinance ventures, vocational training, and micro enterprise development are changing this script. You can use the story of Shanthi as an example; she is a woman from the rural village of India.

Being poor she could not even dream of seeing her children go to school or the family obtaining a better standard of living. The situation changed when she was able to borrow a micro-loan from the women’s cooperative financial services.

Having received this small loan, Shanthi began a small business sewing clothes for people. During vocational training, she was trained in sewing and, therefore, started selling clothes in her neighborhood.

Her business progressed well to an extent where she was able to educate her children and also boost the economy of the village. She became an inspiration to other women who wanted to start a business.

Successful women like Shanthi testify that empowering women financially brings a change to their lives and their communities.

Microfinance, especially for women, is significant to economic empowerment. It not only assists marginalized women in business but also strengthens their confidence to be actively involved in their economic status.

It also contributes to economic development by providing new economic activities, promoting the formation of new ventures, and supporting local communities.

Shanthi’s story exemplifies the importance of economic empowerment for women across the world. It helps change entire communities.

2. Education: A Gateway to Opportunity for Women

Education is one of the basic rights of every human being and any change in women empower them. Nonetheless, millions of girls are still unable to get education all around the globe, with special emphasis on poverty, cultural perceptions, and gender prejudices.

Girls’ education helps in the improvement of the health of families, a reduction in the number of child marriages, and boosted economies. Women and girls’ education enable them to empower themselves, know how to change society and lead the change.

The young Pakistani Education activist Malala Yousefzai is a global figure of Education. Malala was almost killed by the Taliban for demanding education for girls, but she has not relented on her call for girls to be educated.

“There are two powers in the world. One is the sword the other is a pen. There is a third power stronger than both, that of women,” said Malala Yousafzai.

Today, she has become an international spokesperson of the United Nations on every girl’s right to education. This has encouraged girls all over the world to follow their dreams no matter the obstacles they come across.

In the same way, the Kakenya Center for Excellence in Kenya educates the female child who otherwise would be forced into early marriage.

The girl’s education center, which was started by a Maasai woman named Kakenya Ntaiya, educates girls while at the same time fighting against cultural injustices towards women.

Once these girls were at the brink of being denied their voice, but today they are in the position of being capable of becoming tomorrow’s great leaders.

3. Changing the Political Landscape for Women

It has been observed that when women participate in government, they support policies related to health, education, gender equity and environmental issues.

Liberia and Africa as a whole was fortunate to have a woman in leadership with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first female president and the first democratically elected woman head of state in the entire Africa.

Her leadership played a very crucial role in rebuilding a nation that was in shambles due to many years of civil conflict which made her an icon of the needy and oppressed women across the African continent.

As the way of bringing change, Liberia’s political landscape shifted through her presidency, which supported peace, women’s rights, and economy.

Likewise, in Rwanda, the women have contributed significantly to reconstruction of the country after the genocide in 1994.

Rwanda now has the highest percentage of women in parliament across the world whereby women occupy 60 percent of the available parliamentary seats.

Women in political leadership have led to the enactment of laws about gender equity in areas such as health, education, economics, environment, politics, and more.

4. Transforming Women’s Health & Well-Being Outcomes

Toyin Ojora Saraki is a distinguished advocate, philanthropist, and healthcare leader whose work has transformed maternal and child health across Africa and beyond.

As the Founder-President of The Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA), established in 2004, she has dedicated over two decades to improving health outcomes, empowering women, and addressing inequalities in reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health.

Born into Nigeria’s esteemed Ojora and Adele royal families, Saraki pursued her legal education in the United Kingdom, earning an L.L.B from the London School of Oriental and African Studies and an L.L.M in International Economic Law from King’s College London.

However, it was her deep-rooted passion for social impact that led her to champion health initiatives, particularly for women and children.

Through WBFA, Saraki has worked alongside global organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Confederation of Midwives, and the UNFPA to strengthen healthcare systems, reduce maternal mortality, and promote midwifery education.

Her leadership extends beyond Africa—she serves as the WHO Foundation’s first Global Health Ambassador and has been recognized internationally for her unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare equity.

Saraki’s influence is not just institutional; it is deeply personal. Her advocacy stems from lived experience, understanding the challenges women face in accessing quality care.

Whether through policy reform, frontline health programs, or international partnerships, she remains a powerful force in ensuring women’s well-being is prioritized.

By reshaping maternal and child health policies, Toyin Ojora Saraki continues to uplift communities, proving that empowered women are the key to building a healthier, more equitable world.

5. Empowering Women with Disabilities (And Seniors)

Equality of women with disabilities also needs to be considered in a discussion of ‘WOMEN EMPOWERMENT’.

For instance, consider the case of Izzy Camilleri, a Canadian designer who launched the ‘IZ Adaptive’ fashion brand aimed at disabled (and senior) citizens.

Adaptive clothing is now a revolutionary concept in the sense that senior women and those with disabilities are able to dress themselves with respect and convenience.

Such a form of empowerment is not just about clothing; it is about empowering people to express themselves, dress more independently, and become more confident.

Camilleri’s adaptive clothing line offers women beautiful clothing options that are easy for them to put on and move in, particularly if the women use mobility implements or have other physical challenges.

These designs give women with disabilities, and aging women, the ability to use products that are designed to respect their individuality and dignity.

Adaptive clothing is bringing a new perspective to the perception of disabled people and fashion. It’s easing the prejudice that is felt by people with physical disabilities, or limited abilities.

Empowering women with disabilities is the most basic form of empowerment, helping women become independent. They learn to speak for themselves, walk alone, dance or run, and participate in society with more confidence.
